Text Box: Big Pond Rumour was founded as a Press site on January 1, 2006 by Sharon Berg and Shawn Drake with Sharon as the Editor and Web Wizard. We launched the (e)Zine and online writers community concept 2 weeks later, on January 13th, 2006. The call went out for submissions and the www community literally overwhelmed us with both the number and quality of their submissions. They were a wonderfully talented international pool of writers that we could not ignore. So we have blended international contributions with Canadian contributions to show what is happening both here at home and across the pond. Yet, while the (e)Zine is international, we remain committed to supporting Canadian poets through publications from our Press. The risk of home-grown talent being overlooked by the major publishing firms in this country remains far too great to ignore. Canada’s greatest poets have always depended upon the integral support from dozens of small independent presses across this country. Thankfully, we have plenty of small publishers who stake their reputations (and often their homes) on the fostering of our emerging writers, or who give nesting to our established colleagues. It is somewhat ironic that our Press is located in a century-old building that once housed a press for the local horse racing sheets. Though we offer an international Zine online, we continue to place our bets on the need for literary presses that support Canadian poets and writers in general. There has long been talk of the challenge e-books and e-zines give to the printing industry and the future of book making. We decided to launch our literary (e)zine (in print and online) even as we began development of a series of Poet Voice CDs, beautiful chapbooks and perfect bound books for Big Pond Rumour, The Press. We are an independent micro press, producing small runs of just 1-2 titles each year plus our Zine. With no external funding, this is as much as we can hope for. Yet, every drop of water finds its place in the pool. Now, take a dip in the pond. Join us. Notice: We no longer accept submissions by snail mail.
