A dog makes

every difference

in how and where we travel.

That is why, my brother,

I was gladdened to learn you have a dog

who dotes upon your guidance.

How every form of life on earth

is fragile and inter-dependent

is obvious while we walk as

friends together.

You and I, brother,

were lonely walkers, infant apes

descended from a shadowy tree,

left to crawl untutored toward the sunlight

so needed to learn hard lessons,

well and swiftly.

We tottered finally upright

ventured out from under shade

so that our human noses might lead

where knowledge is often hiding,

on highest branches

learned also to steer

by star-shine through the tree limbs

as close to the spring as possible

for all of us come at last to the spring

to water and refresh ourselves

together.
