The atom of Uranium 235 smashed with surprising ease

reminiscent of stories that one violin note

could collapse buildings if found, reminding us

God's voice is heard not in earthquakes but

the whistling of gentle air.

scientists, army officers, universities,

captains of industry, all are given credit. Great Britain

controlling Uranium ore in Canada and Rhodesia,

we made the bomb that would be used for

good, newspapers filled with descriptions of a new era

with pictures of industrial towns where parts

are made. In the foreground of Oak Ridge, Tennessee

a chapel benignly settled beside the plant, even

scientists in the desert kneeling to pray. Yes,

God is still in the picture.

God is not mocked on the day of this news. God

made a madman dance, breaking a silence of 20 years,

sent a typhoon to damage the carrier Hornet, a

bomber crashing into the Empire State Building in fog.

these things must also be remembered, our lives

in the hands of He who created as well

as we who have created.

Turning to the Vatican for judgement we

forget our Lord already pronounced when John and James

called fire from the Heavens upon our enemies,

You know not of what Spirit you are, the Son of Man

come not to destroy souls but to save.

And he said, In as much as you do it unto others

you have done it to me. Over and over

in history, this slaughter of the innocents.
