I turned to the tiny spot of ego quivering twenty yards away - the rabbit standing up on his haunches saying - I AM A TREE STUMP I AM A TREE STUMP. You've never seen a tree stump that looked quite so much like a tree stump. Go - I made the gesture. The rabbit moved one eye in his wooden pose. Go. He ran. Thumpety thumpety thumpety. I could hear his heart beat. It was beating so quickly his hind legs moved out of synch. I don't know if that rabbit was next night's dinner. But I saw that fox - I know it was that fox because he was on the same patch of ground being mobbed by magpies when he came too close to their nest. He was looking hangdog as the birds gave him whatfor, they were really giving him a hard time, crying out for all to hear - UGLY OLD FOX UGLY OLD FOX - but he gave them the slip by running into a stand of bracken and then out again at an angle.
