While he is no stranger to writing for his own pleasure, as John Merrick says, his literary publications are modest. However, his literary accomplishments cannot be measured by their number. His very first publication, a short story called Beach Rose, won Third Prize in the international competition launched by Big Pond Rumour for the Premiere Summer 2006 Issue. His next publication, Misty 1, won Honourable Mention in the Summer 2007 Issue of Big Pond Rumour, The Zine.

John Merrick is considered one of Canada's most prominent counsel in Law. Of course, he has written and published several pieces on civil matters in the course of his career as a lawyer and he also teaches courses at the Dalhousie Law School.
